What to do in the event of a car accident?

It's important to remain as calm as possible, and if there are other passengers involved in the accident, you will then have a calming effect on them. Being calm helps you to adequately evaluate the situation and remember how the accident actually happened.

Injuries

The next step is to check if you or anybody else may be injured. First check yourself, and then if possible check any other passengers in your car, and anybody else that was involved in the accident. When you have gathered the information call the emergency services. Inform them of your location and what services you will need - Gardaí, Ambulance, Fire Brigade. Let them know how many vehicles and people are involved, and if they are injured, inform them of the injuries sustained.

To move your car or not

Before you even consider moving any vehicles involved, it is a good idea to photograph the accident scene. Take photos of all the vehicles involved, any damage sustained to the vehicles, and if possible some close-up pictures of the damaged areas. Make sure to include the positions of the vehicles relative to the road. If you don't have a camera with you, then write write down all of the above details that a photo would otherwise describe.

If a serious motor accident has occurred, then do not attempt to move any vehicles. If the vehicles hazard lights are still working then it is a good idea to switch these on to warn oncoming traffic. If you or anybody else involved in the accident has warning triangles in their vehicle, and if you are capable of moving from your vehicle with exacerbating any injuries, then it is a good idea to place a warning triangle approximately 20 metres behind the vehicle closest to the oncoming traffic. This can make the area safer for both you, and any other parties involved as well as oncoming traffic. If the collision happens on the bend of a road then it is best to put warning triangles on both sides of the bend to alert oncoming traffic. If there is debris on the road which could be hazardous to oncoming traffic, then you could move this debris, but only if it is safe to do so.

If a minor accident has occurred, and if the vehicles are blocking oncoming traffic, you can first take photos of the scene and then proceed to move the vehicles as far left as possible on the road. This prevents a backlog of traffic and also ensures that your vehicle is in a safer position and at a lesser risk of further damage.

If passengers are physically able to exit the vehicle without exacerbating any injuries, then it is a good idea to exit the vehicle and move as far left on the road as possible. Any pets should be left in the car, as if they were to run free, they could cause another accident.
